A complete guide to wearing contact lenses

The information in this section is essential for safe and effective use of coloured contact lenses. Reading it carefully is the first step towards a positive experience and towards protecting the health of your eyes.

Contact lenses, including cosmetic ones, are medical devices. They require hygiene, adherence to replacement schedules and the supervision of a qualified optician or optometrist. Do not buy coloured contact lenses from unqualified retailers or unauthorised websites: the risk to eye health is real.

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE

How to put in and take out contact lenses

Preparation

  1. 1Wash your hands thoroughly with a neutral soap and dry them with a clean, lint-free cloth
  2. 2Prepare a clean, well-lit surface in front of a mirror
  3. 3Always start with the same eye so you do not mix up the lenses

Checking the lens is the right way round

Before applying the lens, place it on the tip of your index finger and look at it against the light:

  1. 1If the edge curves outwards → the lens is inside out: turn it round
  2. 2If the edge turns upwards → the lens is the right way round

Application

  1. 1Place the lens on the tip of the index finger of your dominant hand
  2. 2With your free hand, lift and hold the upper eyelid
  3. 3With the fingers of the same hand, pull down the lower eyelid
  4. 4Look straight ahead and gently place the lens on the corneal surface
  5. 5Release both eyelids and blink a few times
  6. 6If you feel no discomfort, the application has been successful

Removal

  1. 1Pull down the lower eyelid with your middle finger
  2. 2Slide the lens towards the lower part of the eye with your index finger
  3. 3Grip the lens between thumb and index finger and gently remove it
  4. 4Take care not to touch the surface of the lens with your nails

Checking after application

Vision should be optimal immediately after insertion. If your vision is blurred, check that the lens is not inside out: if it is, remove it, turn it round, clean it and reapply it.

What to do if you feel discomfort

Remove the lens, rinse it with multi-purpose solution and reapply it. If the discomfort persists, remove it for good and contact your optician. Never force wear if you experience burning, heavy watering or redness.
